Fort Aguada

#10 of 37 things to do in Goa

Approximately 18 km from Panjim is the glorious Fort Aguada which is an epitome of Portuguese architecture built in the 17th century. The Portuguese constructed this fort as a defense against the Marathas and the Dutch and many buildings within the fort are still in very good condition. The view from the fort is breathtaking as it overlooks the merging of the Mandovi River and the Arabian Sea. A central jail and a 13 metre high lighthouse stand within the fort. Fort Aguada has also been used as Aguada jail. There is also a statue in front of the jail salutes the freedom fighters. This fort is one of the prime and major heritage sites in Goa.
