Dona Paula

#0 of 37 things to do in Goa

Being the meeting point of the Zuari and Mandovi Rivers, in North Goa just seven kilometres away from Panaji is Goa's most enduring monument. Dona Paula Beach has a very tragic- romantic legend attached to it. It is believed that Dona Paula De Menzes, daughter of a viceroy, threw herself off the cliff when she was not allowed to marry a local fisherman whom she loved and hence the statue was built and dedicated to their passionate, forbidden, and unfulfilled love affair. At the end of the bay of this beach, there is a beautiful hillock. From the top of this hillock one can have views of the Marmugao Harbour and the Arabian Sea up to the Zuari Bridge to the east. There is a Dona Paula Sports Club that offers some of the best water sports facilities like Water scooter rides, Motor boat rides, etc. Other water sports like boating, parasailing, yachting, swimming, wind surfing and fishing are also available. Dona Paula is also famous for the Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary, where one can spot both migratory and local birds. The Festival of Janmashtami (the birthday of Lord Krishna) and the feast of St. Lawrence are celebrated with great enthusiasm here. The annual colorful water sports festival in November is also held at Dona Paula.
