Dharmasthala
The Indian Temple Town
Dharmasthala Tourism
A Pilgrim destination in Karnataka which is famous amongst Vaishnava, Shaiva and Jaina communities, Dharmasthala is known for its Dharamsthala Temple. It houses various shrines such as Shiva, Manjunatha, Dharma Daivas etc. Dharmasthala literally means the Land of Charity and has a scenic beauty that keeps you mesmerized. The temple is quite unusual as it is run by a Jain administration and the poojas are done by a Hindu priest of the Madhva order. November-December, this place is lit because of Lakshadweepa, the festival of lights.
A place of spirituality, Dharmasthala is also known to represent a religious tolerance. There is a local legend that goes about this place that tells us that the Shiva Linga brought to this place was by a local person with exquisite powers. This local person was named Annappa. It is said that once the Heggade family wanted a Shiva Linga to worship and Annappa promised them one as he was learnt to work there. The next morning, neither the linga nor Annappa were sighted around but the linga was already placed at Dharmasthala, a little away from the Heggade family. There are many other tourist attractions such as Manjusha Museum, Shiva Temple, Manjunatha temple etc. A big attraction is the Bahubali statue that is thirty-nine feet high and is carved out of only one stone.
