Situated at a distance of 30 km in the Channagiri Taluk of Davanagere, this lake has a background marked by 800 years. It took 3 years for the finishing of the tank and it is otherwise called Shanti Sagara. This lake is the main source of irrigation and is known to be the second biggest lake in the Asian continent. Legend says that the tank had once belonged to Swargavati, which was than rule by King Vikramaraaya. The queen of the kingdom gave birth to a baby girl who was said to borne by the blessings of Lord Shiva and she was named Shantava. The tank was established by her and since it submerged the kingdom, she was cursed to be a prostitute and henceforth the name, Sulekere. A temple dedicated to Lord Siddeshwara situated in the vicinity attracts bunches of devotees throughout the year. An incredible channel structured by Sir M Visvesvaraya also draws tourist to the destination.
