Dachigam National Park is a national park that covers an area of 500 square km. It is located at a distance of around 22 km. The name means “ten villages”, it is believed that the name is given in the memory of the ten villages that were shifted from that place for the formation of the national park. The park has a water body located very close to the national park by the name of Sarband water body. The park was initially protected by the Maharaja of Jammu and Kashmir and now by the concerned government authorities. The park initially served as a source of water for the city of Srinagar, however in the year 1981 it was declared as a National Park. The Park has alpine pastures, meadows, waterfalls and scrub vegetation. These are generally covered with bright, colourful and beautiful flowers, except for winters when these are generally covered with snow. The national park is mainly known for its Kashmir Stag. However there are also other animals that can be spotted, like Musk Deer, Leopard, Himalayan Serow, Kashmir grey langur, Leopard cat, Jackal, Hill Fox, Himalayan Weasel, Himalayan brown Bear, Long-tailed marmot and many more. The different species of birds are Cinnamon Sparrow, Black Bulbul, Minivet, Himalayan Monal, Woodpecker, Wagtail, Chough, Himalayan Rubythroat, Wallcreeper, Bearded Vulture, Kashmir-flycatcher etc. During winters, Upper Dachigam cannot be accessed and the temperature in Lower Dachigam falls to -10⁰C. The animals are generally most active in the early morning and late afternoons. The National Park has faced deterioration due to the political unrest.
People visiting Dachigam National Park can stay at Srinigar where there are many luxurious as well as affordable hotels and also houseboats that are of different prices. However for those who want to get the feel of the National Park entirely, there is some lodging available both in Upper as well as Lower Dachigam. In Lower Dachigam there are Panzgam and Laribal and in Upper Dachigam ther are Sangargulu and Gratnar.
There are no restaurants or food joints at Dachigam National Park. However people who are staying at Srinagar will get a lot of food options. Non-vegetarian dishes are more popular in Srinagar than vegetarian dishes. Mughlai and North Indian are the most popular cuisines in Srinagar however Punjabi and other cuisines are also available in Srinagar.

How to Reach by Train
Dachigam National Park does not have a railway station of its own. The nearest station is at Jammu.. Places like Mumbai, Delhi, Kanyakumari, Indore, Pune, Chennai, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Jabalpur and Rishikesh are all well connected to Jammu railway station.
How to Reach by Bus
There are state-run buses as well as those owned by the private agencies that connect Srinagar to other places like Delhi, Chandigarh and Jammu. There are buses from the park to Srinagar which is a cheaper option to travel.
How to Reach by Road
There are proper metal roads that connect Srinagar to Lower Dachigam. Upper Dachigam can only be travelled by foot. Regular jeeps as well as hiring a taxi is a good option as he transport facilities are not that good from the national park.

The nearby places that tourists can visit are Srinagar city, Sonamarg, Pahalgam, Dal Lake, Shalimar Bagh, Nishat Bagh, Gadsar Lake, Betaab Valley, Chashm-E-Shahi, Vishansar Lake, Baltal Valley, Zoji La Pass, Krishnasar Lake, Thajiwas Glacier, Gangabal Lake, Dastgir Sahib, Gulmarg, Amarnath, Manali and many more. These places are also equally attractive and beautiful.
There are also jeep as well as elephant safari organized for the tourists to explore the wildlife. Dachigam National Park has a huge variety of flora and fauna. The jeep safaris are generally taken early in the morning or throughout the day till evening. There is also a forest department guide present in each jeep. The elephant safaris take place for tiger spotting early in the morning.
