Dachigam National Park Tourism

Dachigam National Park is a national park that covers an area of 500 square km. It is located at a distance of around 22 km. The name means “ten villages”, it is believed that the name is given in the memory of the ten villages that were shifted from that place for the formation of the national park. The park has a water body located very close to the national park by the name of Sarband water body. The park was initially protected by the Maharaja of Jammu and Kashmir and now by the concerned government authorities. The park initially served as a source of water for the city of Srinagar, however in the year 1981 it was declared as a National Park. The Park has alpine pastures, meadows, waterfalls and scrub vegetation. These are generally covered with bright, colourful and beautiful flowers, except for winters when these are generally covered with snow. The national park is mainly known for its Kashmir Stag. However there are also other animals that can be spotted, like Musk Deer, Leopard, Himalayan Serow, Kashmir grey langur, Leopard cat, Jackal, Hill Fox, Himalayan Weasel, Himalayan brown Bear, Long-tailed marmot and many more. The different species of birds are Cinnamon Sparrow, Black Bulbul, Minivet, Himalayan Monal, Woodpecker, Wagtail, Chough, Himalayan Rubythroat, Wallcreeper, Bearded Vulture, Kashmir-flycatcher etc. During winters, Upper Dachigam cannot be accessed and the temperature in Lower Dachigam falls to -10⁰C. The animals are generally most active in the early morning and late afternoons. The National Park has faced deterioration due to the political unrest.
