Coonoor Tourism

Coonoor is a hill station located in the state of Tamil Nadu. It falls in the Nilgiris district. The hill station falls on the way from Coimbatore to Ooty. The main attractions at the place for tourists are Sim’s Park, Dolphin’s Nose, Catherine Falls, Lamb’s Rock, Droog Fort, Law’s Falls etc. The nearest city to the hill station is Coimbatore, which is located at a distance of around 70 km. It is the second largest hill station in the Nilgiris, after Ooty.  Despite of all the attraction sites in the hill station, the major attraction for which it is popular are the green slopes of tea plantations. This place was used as a summer retreat by the British after they had discovered it. It is a town with a population of 45,954. The train ride that takes people in the midst of the Nilgiris has been declared as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and provides an unforgettable experience. There are also several trekking trails for the trekkers that start from Coonoor and goes till Lamb’s Rock, that is 9 km from Coonoor. There is also a Lady canning’s Seat ahead of the Lamb’s Rock that offers a view of the Nilgiris and has a variety of birds such as thrushes, babblers, larks, cuckoos, robins, vultures, eagles and song birds. Coonoor is considered to be a cleaner substitute of Ooty. The hill station is a more favourable option to choose as it has the same climate as Ooty, however it is less crowded and is much more cleaner than Ooty.  


Coonoor is famous for the jams that are made up of fruits like peach, mulberry and passion fruit. It also provides unadulterated organic honey. Rajma and avare beans are also a very popular dish of the hill station. The place provides its visitors with both north Indian and south Indian dishes. The hill station is well known for its organic products like honey, pure lavender, eucalyptus oil etc.

How to reach

Coonoor does not have an airport or a railway station. The lace is well connected to other cities via roadways. 

How to Reach by Flight

Coonoor does not have an airport of its own. The nearest airport is at Coimbatore, which is located at a distance of around 45 km from the hill station. However Bangalore is the closest international airport that connects all the major cities of India to the place as well as connects it to abroad. There are taxi and bus services available from outside the airport.

How to Reach by Train

Coonoor does not have a railway station of its own because of its hilly terrain. The nearest station is located at Mettupalayam, which is located at a distance of around 45 km from Coonoor. A larger and well known railway station is the Coimbatore Junction, which is located at a distance of around 75 km. Bus and taxi services are available are from outside the railway station.

How to Reach by Bus

There are state-buses as well as those owned by the private agencies that help to connect Coonoor to other places. Coonoor is located at a distance of around 293 km from Bangalore, and around 68 km from Coimbatore.  

How to Reach by Road

Road transport is the easiest way of travelling in Coonoor. It is well connected to all the major cities like Bangalore, Coimbatore and Kochi. Taxis and cars are also available to travel from other cities. The toy train can also be taken from Ooty.

How to travel within

There are local city bus services, rickshaw pullers, cabs, taxis are common modes of travelling from one place to the other. Bicycle can also be availed by the locals as well as the tourists. Bikes and scooters are also available. Tourists can also roam around the place and move from one place to the other by walking.


Coonoor celebrates a number of festivals. Fruit and vegetables festival is held annually at Sim’s Park. It is organized in the month of May and is attended by a large number of tourists. It also holds a tea and tourist festival that is held annually and attracts tea connoisseurs from all over the world. The people of the place also celebrate Christmas, New Year, Pongal, Makar Sankranti etc. Yaksha Festival, Mamallapuram Dance Festival and Thai Pushyam are also some of the festivals.

Day 3- After breakfast leave for shopping.
