Land of Coffee
Chikmagalur (literally means The Land of Younger Daughter) is one of the most popular hill stations in Karnataka. It is known for its vast coffee plantations and in fact is the first place in India to cultivate coffee. Chikmagalur is a popular weekend getaway from Bangalore as it is just 240km ( can be covered in about 3-4 hours ) away. It is in the foothills of Mullayanagiri range. Sightseeing includes Bhadra Wildlife sanctuary which is a tiger reserve. Chikmagalur has a pleasant climate throughout the year even during the summer.
Trekking in Chikmagalur
The most popular activity here is trekking, the treks are of moderate to highly difficult.
It is the highest peak in Karnataka sitting at an altitude of 6330ft.The trekking starts at Sarpadari ( Sarpa means snake and Dari mean path ). It is a 4km trek which is moderately difficult. There is a temple at the top of the peak.
Kemmanagundi is about 2 hours away from Chikmagalur via road. The trek is scenic with few waterfalls on the way to the Z-point.
Where to Stay
There are many accommodation options in Chikmagalur town. You can easily find an accommodation in any price range. There are a few Bungalows like Captain's Bungalow (http://www.thecaptainsbungalow.com/) which are surrounded by coffee plantations. Homestays are available near trekking routes.
NOTE: Homestays will be fully booked during weekends, book in advance. Decent hotels can also get fully booked during weekends, book before you start the trip.
There are numerous good restaurants in the town which serve Malanadu Cuisine ( local cuisine) and north Indian cuisine. Food stalls near tourist attractions are very less.
