Chikmagalur Tourism

Chikmagalur (literally means The Land of Younger Daughter) is one of the most popular hill stations in Karnataka. It is known for its vast coffee plantations and in fact is the first place in India to cultivate coffee. Chikmagalur is a popular weekend getaway from Bangalore as it is just 240km ( can be covered in about 3-4 hours ) away. It is in the foothills of Mullayanagiri range. Sightseeing includes Bhadra Wildlife sanctuary which is a tiger reserve. Chikmagalur has a pleasant climate throughout the year even during the summer. 

Trekking in Chikmagalur

The most popular activity here is trekking, the treks are of moderate to highly difficult. 

Mullayanagiri Trek

It is the highest peak in Karnataka sitting at an altitude of 6330ft.The trekking starts at Sarpadari ( Sarpa means snake and Dari mean path ). It is a 4km trek which is moderately difficult. There is a temple at the top of the peak. 

Kemmanagundi Trek

Kemmanagundi is about 2 hours away from Chikmagalur via road. The trek is scenic with few waterfalls on the way to the Z-point.

Where to Stay

There are many accommodation options in Chikmagalur town. You can easily find an accommodation in any price range. There are a few Bungalows like Captain's Bungalow (http://www.thecaptainsbungalow.com/) which are surrounded by coffee plantations. Homestays are available near trekking routes.

NOTE: Homestays will be fully booked during weekends, book in advance. Decent hotels can also get fully booked during weekends, book before you start the trip.

Food

There are numerous good restaurants in the town which serve Malanadu Cuisine ( local cuisine) and north Indian cuisine. Food stalls near tourist attractions are very less.

Chikmagalur is connected to all major cities through Mangalore and Bangalore. It does not have its own airport or railway stations but is well connected with Bangalore and Mangalore by road.

How to Reach by Flight

Mangalore Airport, which is located around 113 km away, is the nearest airport to Chikmagalur. The airport is well-connected to flights from Chennai, Kolkata, Mumbai and other major Indian cities. You can hire a prepaid taxi from the airport for Chikmagalur.

How to Reach by Train

The city does not have a railway station, so the nearest railway station is located in Kadur, at a distance of about 40 km away. You can take a taxi from Kadur railway station for Chikmagalur.

How to Reach by Bus

Chikmagalur is connected to cities like Bangalore, Mangalore , Hubli and Hassan by government buses and private luxury buses.

How to Reach by Road

Chikmagalur is 150km from Bangalore and 150km from Mangalore.
