BR Hills Tourism

BR Hills, also known as BIligirirangana Hills, is located in the state of Karnataka. It lies in the Chamarajanagar district. The nearest city is Mysore, which is located at a distance of around 80 km. The hills lie at a spot where the eastern and the western ghats meet and create a diverse eco-system. Biligirirangana Hills derive its name from the Rangaswamy Temple, which is located on the top of a white cliff. The hill hs a wide variety of Flora and Fauna and is a heaven between the two ghats. The Dodda Sampide Mara means big champak tree. It is a spiritual site which holds a two thousand year old tree, which is 34 m in height ad 20 m in width. There are several legends attached to the tree and it is worshipped by the locals every year for prosperity as it is considered to be the incarnation of Lord Shiva.

The options of food or eatery are not much in this place and thus the choices and options get restricted. However the typical south Indian dishes like Dosa, Idli, Vada, Bisi Bele Bath, Akki Roti, Jolada Ra Roti, Sambhar, Chiroti, Kesari Bath, Mysore Pak and other various dishes are available and can be enjoyed by the tourists.

How to reach

BR Hills does not have an airport of its own; neither does it have a railway station. However it is connected to other cities by well connected roads.

How to Reach by Flight

BR Hills does not have an airport of its own and the nearest airport is the Mysore Domestic Airport, located at a distance of around 97 km from the hills. Taxi services are available from outside the airport. However the major international airport is the Bangalore International Airport which is the closest to the hills, located at a distance of around 210 km.

How to Reach by Train

BR Hills does not have a railway station of its own. The nearest railway station is the Chamarajanagar Station; located at a distance of around 40 km. Taxis and bus services are available from outside the railway station. The nearest major railway station is however the Mysore Junction, located at a distance of around 66 km from BR Hills.

How to Reach by Bus

State-run buses by KSRTC as well as those owned by private agencies are also available that connect the place to major cities like Bangalore and also to other places like Chamarajnagar, Kanakapura, Kollegal and several other nearby places.

How to Reach by Road

There are also well maintained roads that make it easier to reach BR Hills. The Bangalore-Mysore highway helps to connect the major cities to Maddur, from where Malavalli can be reached, which also leads to Kollegal town. BR Hills takes around a 30 minutes ride in car from Kollegal.

How to travel within

Cabs can be availed to move from one place to the other in the hills. Walking can also be an option for many people. 


One of the major festivals in BR Hills is Vinayak Chaturthi, which is dedicated to Lord Ganesha and is celebrated every year in the month of September. The Soliga Tribe of the place celebrates two mjor festivals. One of them is the worship of the oldest tree Dodda Sampige Mara on the eve of Mahashivratri, as it is considered to be the incarnation of Lord Shiva. They pray the tree for their prosperity and provide flowers and milk. Another festival is where they worship Lord Ranganatha during Ranganatha Car festival, which is celebrated every year in the month of April. During this festival, the deities of Biligiri Ranganatha and Ranganayaki are taken on a chariot, also known as Ratha, down the BR Hills.

BR Hills Itinerary


Day 1- After reaching the airport or the railway station proceed towards BR Hills. After reaching the place, leave for Biligiri Rangaswamy Temple and go for shopping.

Day 2- After breakfast leave for BRT Wildlife Sanctuary and then go for all the various activities that can be enjoyed at BR Hills. Then go for shopping.
