Lalgarh Palace

#3 of 15 things to do in Bikaner

Maharaja Ganga Singhji of Bikaner constructed a Palace that has endured both time and desert sun for over a century. Discovered deep in the core of the Thar Desert, the Lallgarh Palace has all the attractiveness and brilliance of a regal era that has continued ever since. The Palace has a surprisingly melodious combination of east and west and is recognised amongst the most extraordinary imperial habitations constructed during the 19th century. Its Designer, Sir Samuel Swinton Jacob, admired the supplement of local Indian artisans. The end is a monumental edifice with prestigious Mughal and Rajput finishes ornamenting the outside, and British-inspired linings concluded with billiard, smoking, and card rooms. It is stated to be Jacob’s most exquisite production. The outside of Lallgarh Palace is comprised of fragile stone carving and has the distinguishing tint of the red sandstone of the Thar Desert. The cupolas domes and terraces were modelled by local craftsman with such subtlety that even today the hard red sandstone has the delicate features of decoration.
