Bhimbetka rock shelters is located in the Raisen district of Madhya Pradesh, India. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site which is located at a distance of around 48 km from Bhopal. The caves trace the early human life. It has 7 hills and more than 750 rock shelters over a distance of 10 kilometres, some of which were inhabited more than 100,000 years ago. The site is an evidence of human settlement and cultural evolution, like hunter-gatherers, agriculture, expressions of spirituality etc during the prehistoric, Palaeolithic and Mesolithic, as well as historic period. Bhimbetka rock shelters show cave paintings which are 30,000 years old and are paintings of animals dance and hunting, which is the oldest known rock art in the Indian subcontinent. However, the site also has geometric figures which are of the medieval period. The name ‘Bhimbetka’ was derived from Bhima, a hero-deity of Mahabharata. Bhimbetka means “the sitting place of Bhima”.

Bhimbetka is a tourist spot and not a proper city thus there are no specific food that are special in this place and most of the dishes are the ones which are found in Bhopal. Poha Jalebi is a very popular delicacy in Bopal as well as in Bhimbetka, it is found in stalls near the cave along with a hot cup of tea, known as cut chai in the local areas. Chaat is also very popular. Other Mughal delicacies like chicken tikka, biriyani, goat kebabs are also very popular.      

How to reach

Bhimbetka is connected to rest of the country by roads. It does not have an airport or a railway station of its own. It is however connected to other cities by almost regular flights that fly to the nearest airport.

How to Reach by Flight

Bhimbetka does not have an airport of its own. The nearest airport is Raja Bhoj Airport in Bhopal, which is around 48 km away from the Bhimbetka. The airport connects the city to other major cities like Mumbai, Delhi, and Indore etc.

How to Reach by Train

There is no railway station at Bhimbetka. The nearest one is Bhopal Junction Railway Station which is at a distance of around 45 km from Bhimbetka.

How to Reach by Bus

Bhimbetka is located at a distance of less than 50 km from the city of Bhopal and there are state-run buses as well those owned by private agencies are available that connect Bhimbetka to Bhopal.

How to Reach by Road

The place is well connected by roads with several other cities. It is at a distance of around 636 km from Ahmedabad and will take around 10 hours by road. Indore is at a distance of around 211 km and will take around 6 hours by road; Nagpur is at a distance of around 325 km and will take around 6 hours by road.

How to travel within

Auto, buses and cabs are available within the city to move from one destination to the other.

Highlights of the Main Rock Shelters                                                                          

Rock Shelter 1 has paintings of two elephants; the first one is being ridden by a man carrying swords and spears, a horseman and a soldier. Rock Shelter 3, known as Auditorium Cave, has paintings of bulls, buffaloes, deer, tiger, peacock and an unfinished basket. It also has line drawings of humans and animals. Rock Shelter 4, known as the Zoo Rock, has paintings of more than 250 animals, scenes of royal processions, warriors and other decorative designs. Rock Shelter 6 has dancing figures of men and women. Rock Shelter 7 has paintings of Swordsmen and horse riders.  Rock Shelter 9 has paintings of a horse, an elephant and flower pots. Rock Shelter 10 has a god figure, believed to be Nataraja. Rock Shelter 11 has hunting scenes. Rock Shelter 15, known as Boar Rock, has a painting of a huge boar chasing humans.

Bhimbetka Itinerary

Day 1- After reaching Bhopal airport, roam around the city of Bhopal for the day and then go to Bhimbetka.

Day 2- After breakfast leave for The Rock Caves. Then proceed towards Hoshangabad.

Day 3- After breakfast leave for Bhojpur.
