Bekal Tourism

Bekal is a town in the Kasaragod district. It is a beautiful town in the state of Kerala. The main attraction of the town is Bekal Fort, which is in the shape of a keyhole and is one of the largest forts in Kerala.

Kasaragod is the main town near Bekal. Bekal beach is popular for its backwaters and the scenic beauty.  Tourists generally gather in the beach after sunset to enjoy the beautiful and fascinating view while walking the walkway or to engage in the water sports. People can also enjoy the sunset and the sunrise on the beach.  A ride in a Kettuvallam, the traditional houseboats of Kerala, which helps people to experience the backwaters, is also one of the main tourist attractions.

Bekal is well known for both steamed and fried food. Steamed foods include Puttu, Iddali, Idiyappam and Ada. Among the fried foods, the popular dishes are Fish fry, Fried bananas and Bhajji. Apart from these dishes, certain Kearalan delicacies are pickled mango drink, coconut water, rice, wheat, coconut and Toddy (local brew made of coconut water)

How to reach

Bekal does not have an airport or a railway station of its own. However after reaching the nearest airport, Mangalore, and the 2 nearest railway stations, the transportation becomes easy. The town is also connected by proper roads to other cities.

How to Reach by Flight

Bekal is a beautiful town however does not have an airport of its own. The nearest airport is Mangalore airport, which is located at a distance of around 67km. The airport has regular flights from Chennai and Bangalore and is also well connected with the other cities of the country. After reaching the airport, taxi services are available to reach Bekal. The nearest international airport is Calicut International Airport at Kozhikode, located at a distance of 200km.

How to Reach by Train

The nearest railway stations from the town of Bekal are Kasargod and Kanhagad, which are located at a distance of around 14km and 16km. After reaching the railway stations, there are taxi services available to reach the town. There are other stations at Kottikulam and Pallikere which have access to local trains.

How to Reach by Bus

The nearest bus stand is located at Kasaragod at a distance of 12km from the city. There are both state-run and private agency buses that help to connect the town with various other places. Bekal can also be reached from other cities through well connected roadways. 

How to Reach by Road

Coimbatore is at a distance of around 358km from Bekal and Bangalore is at a distance of around 381km. Whereas Mangalore is at a distance of around 67km from the town. Thus the town is well connected to several other cties.

How to travel within

The only option available inside the town is autorickshaws


There are certain annual temple festivals in Bekal. Madhur Temple holds the festival in March/April, Mallikarjuna Temple holds it in the month of March, Bekal Fort Mukhya Prana Temple holds it in the month of april. Madiyankulam Durga Temple holds two festivals, Kalasam, wgich falls in the month of May/June, and Pattulsavam, December/January. There is also a Feast organised at the Bela Church, called Perunnal, which falls in the month of December. Other festivals like Theyyam festivals, Kalom Kanipu Utsavam, Bharani festival, Kambala Buffalo Race are also celebrated.  

Bekal Itinerary

Day 1- Reach Mangalore Domestic Airport, after which proceed towards the hotel. After breakfast leave for Bekal Fort and then visit the Bekal Fort Beach. Then visit the Chandragiri Fort. After that spend some time at the Kappil Beach and then return to the hotel.

Day 2- After breakfast leave for Ananthapura Temple and then go to Valiyaparamba Backwaters.

Day 3- After breakfast visit nileshwaram town and then spend the rest of the day in the Bekal Hole Aqua Park.
