The Barpeta Satra

#1 of 4 things to do in Barpeta

Barpeta Satra is a significant spiritual spot in Assam. Dating back to 500 years old, the place was founded by a saint called Madhabdev in the year 1583 AD.  The spot was initially recognised as 'Barpetathan'. Saint Madhabdev lived here for 8 years although he departed to acquire knowledge from Sri Srimanta Sankaradeva, and dispensed the duty of the Satra to one of his adherents called Sri Mathura Das Burha Ata.
