It is an influential transportation focus with railway and highway connections all nearby. Since freedom, it has developed as a leading learning centre as well. It is the headquarters of the Purba Bardhaman district, having grown as a district capital throughout the days of British rule. With a confluence of faith, nature, man-made wonders and the familiar classical life enchantment, Bardhaman is the perfect episode for a weekend getaway. Conceivably the sole place in India that manages to assuage every spirit and mindset, this Unique Bengali town has an atmosphere of its own. Bardhaman receives its honour from Vardhamana Mahavira, the last Jain Tirthankara in 6th century BC, who is said to have crossed this area. Found in the fertile meadows of Bengal, it has been the destination of several invaders. The place has witnessed countless conflicts and battles where the most poignant being the clash between Sher Afgan and Qutubuddin Aibak in 1610, to resolve the future of Meherunissa, spouse of Sher Afgan, who emerged as Noor Jehan.
