Lal Chowk

#6 of 7 things to do in Anantnag

The memorable and key significance of Lal Chowk has been ever-present in Indian history books since the battle for the opportunity that the nation defeated in 1947. Named after the much renowned Red Square in Moscow, Russia, Lal Chowk means a similar name. The name was given by left-wing activists. Situated in the focal point of the city of Srinagar, it has seen a few authentic minutes in its lifetime - from the spreading out of the national banner here in 1948 by previous head administrator Jawaharlal Nehru to the scandalous assaults on the then BJP president Murali Manohar Joshi by Pakistani aggressors in 1992. It houses the renowned Ghanta Ghar - Clock Tower, which was worked here in 1980.
