Kuttanad

#6 of 12 things to do in Alleppey

The endless paddy fields on both sides of the roads give you an idea of its nickname “The rice bowl of Kerala”. This village lies between Alappuzha and Kottayam districts of Kerala and has an enchanting effect on the travellers. Lying 1m below the sea level it is one of the rarest places on earth where farming is so extensively done below the mean sea level.

The Alappuzha - Changanassery Road that passes through the heart of Kuttanad is a view to behold at any time of the year. The scene here changes with season, the glowing green bed in sprouting seasons, the deep green carpets when the paddy matures and the golden stretch in the harvesting period; and to watch the farmers sow, water, weed and harvest are equally amazing. The countryside offers rare sights like large flocks of ducks swimming and fishing in the lakes, migratory birds and other livestock basking in the sun people fishing in the back waters and much more.
