If you are visiting Alappuzha in the months of February and March, Chettikulangara bagavathi temple should be a definite stop in your trip. This temple, in Mavelikkara is famous for its "kumbha-bharani" festival at this time of the year. The temple houses an enormous granite oil lamp that has more than 1,000 wicks; when lit is a sight to watch. The bharani festival is marked with huge celebrations and grand feasts. The high light of the festival is a ride showcasing giant wooden icons of lord Bhima and Hanuman with horses and Chariots, known as ‘Kettukazhcha’.
