Jain Caves, Ellora

#2 of 12 things to do in Ajanta and ellora caves

Located to the north end of Ellora caves, away from all the bustle of tourists lies the five Jain caves. Though smaller compared to the Buddhist and Hindu caves, these caves have exquisite and beautiful carvings done on to the walls, pillars as wells as the ceilings. Built between 9th and 11th century, the detailing within the caves are often referred to as exquisite poetry done in stone. The first cave which catches the eye of the traveller is cave 30 which is also known as Chota Kailasa temple after the great Hindu temple close-by. However, the most important caves are cave 32 and 33 which are also known as Indra Sabha (Assembly Hall of Indra) and Jagannath Sabha.
