Daualatabad fort, Daulatabad

#11 of 12 things to do in Ajanta and ellora caves

Located 15 kms from the city of Aurangabad is the most ancient and beautiful fortification of Daulatabad. Known to be one of the most well-preserved forts within the country, the fort is often referred to as one of the seven wonders of Rajasthan. Build in 12thC on top of a conical hill, the design of the fort makes it one of the most powerful ones of the medieval period. The construction of the Daulatabad Fort was peculiar, and it was meant to be such so that any enemy marching towards it is thrown off track. The fort had a single doorway which served as both the entrance and the exit. The unique and strategic position of the fort, along with its mesmerizing architectural elements, the contrast of ancient structure to the verdant array of fields all around, the fort is a must visit once you are in Aurangabad. The most challenging part of visiting the fort is that it can only be accessed on foot. After an upward hike of 750 odd steps, you are welcomed with the most enchanting and beautiful view of the city, which makes all the effort and time worth it.
